Anyway this time was real. January 2nd , my birthday I received the call and I couldn’t have received a better gift than that.
I always had the dream of going in a night tour of insects that is offer in Drake Bay, Costa Rica. Finally my chance came. But this story is not about my trip is about music and the great people I met in the village.
They have a small school there beside the ocean and they don’t have a lot of help from the government ,for example, to get instruments to teach music.
I really fell in love with the place and I promised I would be back.
Again looks like the universe is supporting me in some way (but I also check the Internet a lot). There is an important Conference about Latin American music education and every year is in another country.
Guess what…? September 2014 is in San Jose, Costa Rica.
I will be applying to Canada Council for the Arts to go to the Conference (I got funding many years ago to go to Argentina) and my goal is to take with me at least 30 recorders and some percussion instruments, if I am able to bring them on the little plane (10 people) from San Jose to Bahia Drake.
I want to teach recorder to the local kids and also how to make instruments with elements you can find in nature, imagine the kind of landscape Costa Rica has.
I feel like this personal mission is the same as the one I am fulfilling with my organization World Folk Music Ottawa. Helping underserved populations and providing new music opportunities for children. You never know how much you can affect the life of a child with something like learning recorder.
The last thing I want to share with all of you is this:
I met the mother of a girl that I used to teach piano probably 10 years ago, and she told me that because of me her daughter still loves music and I was her inspiration ( her words not mine).
But you know I feel taller today.
Gracias Pura vida
